Education and Feminist Activism
Annett Lu, the Vice President of Taiwan, holds a law degree from Harvard University in the United States. During the rule of the Kuomintang party, which ended in 2000, she actively advocated for feminist ideals.
Political Ambitions
In 2008, Vice President Lu announced her intention to run for the presidency, vowing to improve tense relations with China. If elected, she would become Taiwan's first female president. The 60-year-old Lu had to secure the nomination of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in a primary election in May, facing strong competition.
Call for Improved China Relations
"I need to fight another election to write a new chapter in Taiwan's history," Lu declared at a press conference. She advocated strengthening ties with China, emphasizing increased exchanges at all levels based on principles of cooperation, coexistence, and shared prosperity.
Political Imprisonment and Electoral Success
Lu's political activism led to her imprisonment for 12 years. After her release, she won a seat in the legislature. She went on to become the running mate of presidential candidate Chen Shui-bian in the 2000 presidential election.
