Early Life and Education
Lithuanian philosopher, art historian, and culturologist, Algis Uždavinys was born in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1948. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1973. He earned his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1978, followed by a doctoral dissertation in 1990.
Academic Career
Uždavinys pursued postdoctoral studies at Sorbonne University and the Collège de France in 1981-82 and at the Centre de Recherches sur l'art in Paris in 1998. He has lectured at various universities worldwide, including in France, Japan, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, Poland, Russia, and others.
Institutional Positions
Uždavinys holds several prestigious positions, including academic expert at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, professor at Vilnius University, and professor at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. He is the head of the Department of Comparative Cultural Research at the Lithuanian Institute of Cultural Research and has been the President of the Lithuanian Association of Orientalists since 1991.
Research Interests
Uždavinys's research spans diverse fields, including philosophy, history of ideas, comparative culturology, civilization comparison, aesthetics, philosophy of art, art history, and Oriental studies.
Editorial Roles
He serves as the chairman of the editorial board for several scientific journals: "East-West: Comparative Studies," "Culturology," "Bibliotheca Orientalia et Comparativa," "Research in Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art," "Non-Classical Philosophy," and "Studies in Lithuanian Culture." He is also a member of the editorial board for periodicals such as "Humanistica," "Logos," "Eidos," "Problemos," "Acta Orientalia Vilnensis," and "Limes."
Publications and Achievements
Uždavinys has authored 15 monographs, 38 studies, and over 550 scholarly articles on various topics. He has also compiled 27 scientific publications. Under his supervision, over 25 students have completed their doctoral dissertations.
