Trapped in a Mince

In a horrific workplace accident at Heathcote Fabrics Ltd. in Devon, 21-year-old Anthony Seward had his hand maimed after it was caught in a roller conveyor.

A Unique Healing Process

Surgeons at Bristol's Southmead Hospital performed a "pedicle flap procedure" to save Seward's hand. This involved placing the injured limb in a "pocket" within his abdomen for three weeks to receive blood flow. Later, the arm was removed, and the skin flap was used to cover the damaged area.

Legal Aftermath

Heathcote Fabrics Ltd. was found to have failed to take reasonable measures to prevent access to the dangerous parts of the spreading machine and its rotating rollers. District Judge Stephen Nichols imposed a fine of £300,000 ($384,000) on the company.

Surgeon's Perspective

Surgeon James Henderson proposed a future procedure involving toe-to-hand transplants to improve the function of Seward's fingers, enabling him to "get opposable finger tips that can grip objects."

Ongoing Recovery

Seward has undergone two additional surgeries to separate his fingers, allowing for individual movement. However, his firefighting career is over. "It's been a long, hard, painful 12 months," he said after the Exeter Magistrates' Court hearing.

HSE Investigation

Paul Mansell, prosecuting for the Health and Safety Executive, stated that the guard could have been repaired as all necessary spare parts were available at the factory. However, no action was taken for two years and seven months until Seward's serious injury in August 2016.

Company's Admission of Guilt

Representing Heathcote Fabrics Ltd., Christian Ducann described the incident as "an absolute tragedy" for Seward, who was towards the end of his first four months at the factory. Ducann apologized for the company's "deep regret," adding that Seward "had worked hard and had been an asset to them" and that the spreading machine "should have had a guard on it."

According to court documents, Heathcote Fabrics Ltd. has a turnover of £49 million ($63 million) and net profits of over £5.3 million ($6.8 million).
