Birth and Early Life
Claire Wineland was born on April 10, 1997, in Austin, Texas. She developed a passion for performing at a young age, making her debut in a production of "The Music Man" at the age of four. However, her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at birth. CF is a genetic mutation that causes mucus buildup, clogging the airways and leading to severe respiratory, digestive, and pancreatic issues.
Battling Cystic Fibrosis
Wineland's lung function declined significantly by the age of 13, forcing her into an induced coma to increase her chances of survival. Doctors gave her only a 1% chance of recovery, but after 16 days, the decision was made to bring her out of the coma. Remarkably, Wineland pulled through.
Claire's Place Foundation
Despite the challenges she faced, Wineland remained resilient and determined to make a difference. In 2013, she founded Claire's Place Foundation to support families affected by serious illnesses like CF. The non-profit organization offers tailored support through care packages, emotional assistance, and financial assistance through extended medical grants for families with high-medical expenses and extended hospital stays. Claire's Place Foundation has provided financial assistance to over 26 families to date.
Advocacy and Inspiration
Wineland became an outspoken advocate for those living with chronic illnesses. She delivered a keynote address at the 63rd International Respiratory Congress and Exhibition of the American Association for Respiratory Care. She also spoke at numerous conferences around the world, including several TEDx events. Wineland appeared in the TV series "Red Band Society" and the documentary "My Last Days." She also became a member of the "Breathless Choir," a group of individuals whose lung conditions had brought them together through their love of singing.
Clairity Project
In 2016, Wineland launched the Clairity Project, a website featuring videos that aimed to inspire and educate others living with chronic illnesses. Through the project, she sought to "shed light on what it is truly like to live with debilitating symptoms" and challenge perceptions of illness and those living with it.
Legacy and Awards
Wineland's unwavering spirit and advocacy earned her widespread recognition. She was named one of "Seventeen Magazine's 17 Influencers" in 2016 and received the Fox Teen Choice Award in 2015. She was also honored with the Gloria Barron Prize and the Los Angeles Business Journal's "Nonprofit of the Year" award in 2014.
Literary Contribution
Wineland co-authored the book "Every Breath I Take: Surviving and Thriving with Cystic Fibrosis" with writer Chynna Bracha Levin. The book was published in 2016 and is described as an essential read for anyone who has compassion for a child, family member, or friend whose health has been severely impacted by a life-threatening illness. It also serves as a guide for those who wish to find joy and meaning in life despite adversity.
Death and Organ Donation
On August 26, 2018, Wineland suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot cutting off blood flow to the right side of her brain. She passed away on September 2, 2018, just one week after receiving a lung transplant. Her healthy organs were donated to others in need.
