Early Life and Career

Born into a noble family, Stendhal entered the court of justice in Chatelet as an advisor before the French Revolution.

In the French Revolution

During the revolution, Stendhal served as a deputy in the Legislative Assembly, where he remained a staunch supporter of monarchical principles. His involvement in an uprising against the National Convention led to his death sentence, which he managed to evade by fleeing.

Return and Imprisonment

In 1797, as a member of the Council of Five Hundred, Stendhal faced trial once more for opposing the republican government. He escaped again, this time to avoid deportation to Cayenne.

Later Years

After the revolution, Stendhal was appointed as the general secretary of the Seine department, a position he held until his death.

Legacy

Stendhal, known for his keen observations on human nature and his incisive analysis of society during the turbulent period of the French Revolution, remains a significant figure in French literature and thought.
