Anton Kerner von Marilaun
Early Life and EducationAnton Kerner von Marilaun was born in Mautern, Austria, on October 19, 1831. From an early age, he showed a keen interest in nature, particularly botany.
Medical and Botanical Studies
In 1848, Kerner enrolled at the University of Vienna to study medicine. While completing his medical degree in 1854, he simultaneously pursued studies in natural history, especially botany.
Academic Career
In 1858, Kerner was appointed Professor of Botany at the Polytechnicum in Ofen. Two years later, he took up a chair at the University of Innsbruck. In 1878, he moved to the University of Vienna, where he became Director of the Botanical Garden and Professor of Natural History.
Research and Contributions to Botany
Kerner's research focused primarily on the fields of plant geography, phytocenology, systematics, and plant hybridization. He made significant contributions to the understanding of plant distribution, plant communities, and the evolutionary relationships among plants.
Honors and Recognition
Kerner's accomplishments were widely recognized. In 1872, he was elected a member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. He received numerous other honors and awards throughout his career.
