Early Life and Education

Anton Mylius was born on July 28, 1742, in Cologne, Germany. He belonged to a prominent patrician family, and his father, Johann Heinrich, served as a mayor of Cologne. At the age of 17, Mylius enlisted in the army as a volunteer under Field Marshal Lieutenant Baron von Vogelwang.

Military Career

In 1760, Mylius distinguished himself at the Battle of Glatz under the command of Field Marshal Gideon Laudon. He participated in the campaigns of 1761-1763 and was promoted to captain in 1763. Subsequently, he served as adjutant to Field Marshal Count Hadik, the President of the Hofkriegsrat.

Rise through the Ranks

Mylius steadily rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of major in 1777, lieutenant colonel in 1786, and colonel in 1790. He fought in the War of the Bavarian Succession and the war against Turkey, commanding a battalion. In 1790, he became the colonel of the Laudon Volunteer Corps in the Netherlands.

Valour and Recognition

Mylius's actions at Carde on June 18, 1792, garnered him fame. He held off a 2,000-strong French detachment for several hours, showcasing his bravery and determination. In 1796, he was promoted to general-major and commanded a brigade.

Service in the Army of Germany

Mylius played a significant role in the Army of Germany in 1799. He displayed exceptional courage at the battles of Kirchheim, Erbenheim, and Weinsberg. He also participated in the siege of Mannheim and the Battle of Neresheim.

Command in Italy and Bohemia

In April 1800, Mylius was appointed commander of a division in the Italian Army. He led the offensive into Tuscany and along the Po River. After the peace, he was transferred to Prague as commander of a division. In 1805, he became the commander of Bohemia but retired later that year.

Later Life and Legacy

Anton Mylius, Baron, and Field Marshal Lieutenant, passed away on February 2, 1812, in Prague. He had served his country with honour and distinction throughout his military career. His legacy as a brave and capable commander continues to be remembered in military annals.
