German-born General on International Service

Early Career in Württemberg and Prussia

Born into Saxon nobility, Karl Ludwig August von Wolzogen began his military career as a lieutenant in the Württemberg army in 1792. Two years later, he joined the Prussian forces and fought in the Polish campaign. In 1804, he returned to Württemberg with the rank of major.

Distinction in Russian Service

In 1807, Wolzogen transferred to the Russian army as a major in the quartermaster corps. His exceptional education impressed Emperor Alexander I, who appointed him his aide-de-camp in 1811. Wolzogen's strategic brilliance was recognized by Mikhail Bogdanovich Barclay de Tolly, who entrusted him with crucial assignments.

Service in the Napoleonic Wars

During the 1812 French invasion of Russia, Wolzogen played a key role in planning the campaign. He served as quartermaster for the 1st Western Army and participated in the battles of Vitebsk and Smolensk. At the Battle of Borodino, he was wounded and awarded the Order of Saint Anna, 2nd degree with diamonds.

Return to Prussian Service

After the war, Wolzogen returned to Prussia in 1815 and became a mentor to the future German Emperor Wilhelm I, teaching him military science. He retired in 1836 with the rank of General of Infantry in the Prussian army.
