Antoni Giełgud: Polish General of the 1830 Uprising
Early Life and Military CareerAntoni Giełgud was born into the Giełgud family, a Polish noble lineage. In 1812, he joined Napoleon's invasion of Russia. Following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Giełgud was appointed бригадир-генерал (brigade commander) in the Kingdom of Poland in 1815.
1830 Uprising
Giełgud played an active role in the 1830 November Uprising against Russian rule. He was tasked with leading a special detachment into Lithuania to unite with forces under Chłopicki and Dębiński. The merger was successfully executed in mid-May 1831.
Failed Attack on Vilnius
After a successful engagement with a small Russian force under General Sacken near Rajgród, Giełgud hesitated for several weeks before finally deciding to attack Vilnius on June 7 (19), 1831. However, the Russian forces had received reinforcements, and the rebel attack ended in a complete failure.
Later Actions and Death
Giełgud's subsequent actions were limited to a skirmish with General Dellingshausen's detachment on June 11 (23), and futile attempts to capture the city of Šiauliai. His corps was eventually divided into smaller units, and Giełgud himself was dismissed from command.
Together with Chłopicki's detachment, Giełgud reached the Prussian border on June 19 (July 1), 1831, and crossed it. However, he was immediately shot dead by Lieutenant Skulski, who suspected him of treason. Giełgud's remains were buried in Tilsit (now Sovetsk, Russia).
