Venerable Priest and Martyr

Life and Priesthood

Blessed Antoni Julian Nowowiejski was a Polish priest and member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born into a noble family in Wąsosz, Poland, on August 24, 1858. Antoni pursued his education at the University of Vienna, where he studied theology and philosophy. Upon his ordination in 1885, he served as a parish priest in Końskowola and Opole Lubelskie.

Service in the Seminary

In 1918, Father Nowowiejski became the pro-rector and professor at the seminary in Lublin. During his time there, he dedicated himself to teaching and guiding future priests. He also served as a spiritual director to many young people, fostering their faith and guiding them towards their vocations.

Imprisonment and Martyrdom

After the outbreak of World War II, Father Nowowiejski was arrested by German Nazi authorities in November 1939. He was sent to the Dachau concentration camp, where he spent the next two and a half years enduring brutal conditions and unspeakable horrors. Despite the suffering, he remained steadfast in his faith and provided spiritual comfort to his fellow prisoners.

Beatification

On June 13, 1999, Blessed Antoni Julian Nowowiejski was beatified by Pope John Paul II along with 108 other Polish martyrs of the Second World War. The beatification ceremony took place in Warsaw during the pope's visit to Poland.

Legacy and Commemoration

Blessed Antoni Julian Nowowiejski's memory continues to be cherished by the Catholic Church and the Polish people. His unwavering faith, resilience, and willingness to sacrifice his life for others serve as an inspiration to all who seek to live a life of holiness and dedication to God. His feast day is celebrated on June 12.
