Antonio Alberto Bastos Pimparel - Biography
Antonio Alberto Bastos Pimparel, commonly known as Beto, is a Portuguese footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for the Portuguese club "Sporting" and the national team of Portugal.
Early Career
Beto began his football journey as a youth player in the Lisbon-based club "Sporting." Although he spent several seasons playing for the reserve team, he struggled to break into the main squad and often found himself as the third-choice goalkeeper. Despite his efforts, he never got the opportunity to play for the senior team.
In order to gain more playing experience, Beto joined the club "Casa Pia" on loan, where he played for a season. However, he left "Sporting" in 2004 without having made a significant impact.
Professional Career
Beto's next club was "Gil Vicente," but he failed to secure a place in the team and had to switch clubs once again. In the 2005-2006 season, he played 27 matches for "Maritimo" before joining "Leixoes." At "Leixoes," Beto quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper and the club enjoyed several successful seasons, including a return to the top division and a commendable 6th place finish in their debut season, narrowly missing out on European qualification.
After spending another season at "Leixoes," Beto transferred to "Porto" for a fee of 750,000 euros. He made his debut for the Portuguese national team on June 10, 2009, in a match against Estonia, which ended in a 0-0 draw.
Beto's impressive performances towards the end of the 2009/10 season caught the attention of the national team coach, Carlos Queiroz. As a result, Beto was selected as one of the backup goalkeepers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, supporting Eduardo.
