Biography of Antonio Favaro

Antonio Favaro was an Italian mathematician born on October 21, 1847, and died on September 30, 1922. He received his doctorate degree from the University of Padua and went on to become a professor of projective geometry in 1872. In 1882, he took up the position of professor of graphic statics at the same university.

Contributions in Graphic Statics

Favaro's significant works in graphic statics include "Prime operazioni del calcolo grafico" (published in "Atti del Reale Istituto Veneto di scienze, lettere ed arti", I, 1871—73), "La statica grafica nell'insegnamento tecnico superiore" (published in the same journal, II, 1873), and "Lezioni di statica grafica" (Padua, 1877). He also wrote "Norme di costruz. per aumentare la resistenza d. edifizi contro terremoti" (Venice, 1883), which focused on construction techniques for increasing building resilience against earthquakes.

Contributions in History of Mathematics

Favaro showcased his independence and originality in the field of history of mathematics. His first published work in this area was "Beiträge zur Geschichte der Planimeter" (Förster, "Allgem. Bauzeitung", XXXVIII, 1873). He continued to produce influential works, including "Mezzi usati d. antichi per attenuare le consegu. d. terremoti" (Venice, 1874—75), "Intorno alle opère di Alfredo Clebsch" ("Giornale matematiche pubblicato da g. Battaglini", XII, 1874), and "Notizie storiche sulle frazioni continue dal secolo decimoterzo al decimosettimo" ("Bullettino di bibliografia e di storia delle scienze matematiche e fisiche, published by V. Boncompagni, VII, 1874).

Editor of Galileo Galilei's Works

Favaro's most significant undertaking was his role as the editor of Galileo Galilei's works. In 1886, the Italian government approached him to oversee the editing of a new and comprehensive edition of Galileo's works. From 1890 to 1900, Favaro published ten volumes under the title "Le opere di Galileo Galilei Edizione nazionale." However, there were originally planned to be twenty volumes in total, with ten yet to be published. Favaro's work on Galileo's works also led to the publication of "Bibliografia Galileiana (1658—1895) raccolta ed illustrata" (Rome, 1896), compiled by A. Carli and A. Favaro.

Lectures on the History of Mathematics

Another significant aspect of Favaro's life was his continuous lecturing on the history of mathematics at the University of Padua since 1878. He delivered numerous lectures, further contributing to the field. In total, Favaro published 55 works related to the edition of Galileo Galilei's works and various other areas of mathematics.
