Early Life and Career
Paulo Kassoma was born in Angola and began his political career in the 1970s. From 1978 to 1979, he served as Deputy Minister of Defense for Armaments and Technologies in the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) government.
Government Positions
Kassoma's government service continued in various roles. He was Deputy Minister from 1988 to 1989, Minister of Transport and Communications from 1989 to 1992, and Minister of Coordination of Territorial Administration from 1992 onward.
Governor and First Secretary of Huambo Province
Prior to his appointment as Prime Minister, Kassoma held positions as Governor of Huambo Province and First Secretary of MPLA in that province.
Prime Ministership (2008 - 2010)
After MPLA's victory in the 2008 parliamentary elections, Kassoma was elected Prime Minister by MPLA's Political Bureau on September 26, 2008. President José Eduardo dos Santos appointed him Prime Minister on September 30, 2008. Kassoma's government prioritized national reconciliation.
National Assembly (2010 - 2012)
Following the implementation of a new constitution in 2010, the position of Prime Minister was abolished. Kassoma became President of the National Assembly, replacing Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.
Later Positions
After the 2012 parliamentary elections, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos resumed his position as President of the National Assembly. On June 28, 2013, Kassoma was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of Banco Espírito Santo Angola, a subsidiary of the Portuguese investment holding company ESFG.
