The Military Career of a German General

The distinguished German military officer achieved the rank of General der Infanterie on November 1, 1944.

Early Military Service

From 1915 onwards, he served in the German army during World War I. In 1917, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

In 1937, he was appointed Chief of Operations for the 22nd Infantry Division. By 1939, he had risen to serve in the General Staff of the Army.

In September 1940, he became Chief of Operations for the 11th Army. From 1942, he held the same role for Army Group "Don" (later renamed Army Group "South" in 1943).

Commanding Officer

In July 1944, he assumed command of the 121st Infantry Division and, in August of the same year, commanded the entire I Army Corps.

Commanding the 9th Army

From January 1945, he led the 9th Army. His command saw defeats in the Vistula-Oder Offensive, the operation against Soviet bridgeheads in the Küstrin area, and the Battle of Berlin.

Recognition and Accolade

For his military accomplishments, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on January 30, 1944.
