Biography of Antti Aarne

Antti Aarne, a Finnish folklorist, was born in 1867. He studied in St. Petersburg from 1893 to 1898 and later became a professor at the University of Helsinki. Aarne is known as a representative of the Finnish historical-geographical school in folklore studies. He developed and justified the technical methods of the comparative approach and provided examples of its application to folk creations such as fairy tales, riddles, and songs.

Classification System of Folklore

In the following years, Aarne's developed system for classifying folklore motifs was expanded upon by American researcher Stith Thompson in 1965 and German scholar Hans-Jörg Uther in 2004.
