Early Life and Education

Anneli Jäätteenmäki was born on September 9, 1963, in Leppävirta, Northern Savo. After completing her artistic high school education in Savonlinna in 1982, she went on to study at the Alkio College in Korpilahti, graduating in 1984. Jäätteenmäki earned a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Joensuu in 1994.

Political Beginnings

Jäätteenmäki's political journey began in 1993, when she served as a press secretary during Paavo Väyrynen's presidential campaign. She entered the electoral arena in 1995, winning a seat in the Eduskunta (Finnish Parliament) as a representative for North Karelia. She was re-elected twice, in 1999 and 2007. Since 2015, she has represented the electoral district of Savo-Karelia.

Ministerial Appointments

Jäätteenmäki's ministerial career began in 2007 when she was appointed Minister of Transport in Vanhanen's second cabinet. She retained her post in Kivieniemi's subsequent government. In 2015, she became Minister of Municipal Development in Sipilä's cabinet. In 2019, she assumed the role of Minister of Municipal Development and Transport, succeeding Anne Berner.

Speakership of the Parliament

A major milestone in Jäätteenmäki's career came on June 9, 2020, when she was elected Speaker of the Parliament, the highest-ranking parliamentary position in Finland. She received 167 votes, succeeding Matti Vanhanen. Her tenure as Speaker ended in January 2022 when she announced her resignation.

Personal Life

Jäätteenmäki was married to Timo Hiltunen from 1999 to 2011. She has remained active in Finnish politics, continuing to contribute to the nation's decision-making processes with her experience and expertise.
