Early Life and Career

Aref al-Dajani was born in 1856 in Jerusalem, then part of the Ottoman Empire. His birthplace was in the historic heart of the city, in the Muslim Quarter. He received a traditional education in Islamic studies and Arabic literature, and later traveled to Istanbul to pursue further education.

Mayoralty of Jerusalem

In 1917, during the tumultuous years of World War I, al-Dajani was appointed mayor of Jerusalem by the Ottoman authorities. He assumed the role at a critical juncture, as the war raged around the city. He served as mayor for the duration of the war, until 1918.

Palestinian Nationalist Leader

Following the end of the war, al-Dajani emerged as a prominent leader of the Palestinian nationalist movement. In 1919, he convened the first Palestinian National Congress in Jerusalem, bringing together Palestinian delegates from across the country. The congress demanded the establishment of an independent Palestinian government and rejected the Zionist claims for a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

Aref al-Dajani was a strong advocate for Arab unity. He believed that Palestine should be part of a federation with Syria, an idea that gained traction among some Arab intellectuals. Later Life and Legacy

Al-Dajani continued his political activism until his death on April 14, 1930. He is remembered as one of the pioneers of the Palestinian national movement, and his legacy continues to inspire Palestinian aspirations for independence and self-determination.
