Biography of Walter Veltroni
Walter Veltroni, a native of Rome, was born in July 1955. His entire life and career have been closely associated with the Italian Communist Party. In February 1991, the Italian Communist Party transformed into the Left Democrats.
Career Highlights
During his career, Veltroni held various significant positions. He served as the editor-in-chief of the prominent newspaper "Unita" for a period of time. Additionally, he was the National Secretary of the Left Democrats, formerly known as the Communist Party.
Mayoral Election Victory
In the mayoral election of Rome on May 27, Veltroni emerged victorious as the candidate of the center-left coalition called the "Olive Tree." He secured a 5 percent lead over his right-wing opponent Antonio Tajani from the "House of Freedoms." Despite Tajani's association with media magnate Silvio Berlusconi, who had recently won the parliamentary elections and was set to lead the government, it did not sway the voters in Rome.
Celebrations and Challenges
The victory of Veltroni sparked jubilant celebrations in the Eternal City. Supporters of Veltroni, who shared his ideology, gathered in Sant'Apostoli Square in the center of Rome, chanting "Walter! Walter!" The joy of the victory would have been even greater if the football team "Roma," owned by Berlusconi, had been able to defeat "Milan" on the same evening. However, the match ended in a draw.
