Fabre Geffrard, the son of General Jean-Louis Geffrard, a prominent figure in Haiti's struggle for independence, served as the eighth president of the republic from 1859 to 1867.
Rise to Power
Geffrard's popularity stemmed from his military prowess, particularly in two wars against the Dominican Republic. When Emperor Soulouque threatened his life due to concerns about his growing influence, Geffrard organized a successful rebellion. In 1859, he ascended to the presidency.
Reforms and Achievements
During his presidency, Geffrard implemented numerous reforms. He reformed the customs system, reduced the size of the military, and invested in the construction of warships. These measures aimed to strengthen the nation's economy and defense capabilities.
Fall from Power
In 1867, Geffrard's reign came to an end amid political instability and economic challenges. He was overthrown and forced to flee the country. He sought refuge in Jamaica, where he passed away later that year.
