Early Life and Education

Arnaud Montebourg was born in Autun, France, in 1962. His father, Michel Montebourg, was a tax agent, while his mother, Leïla Ould Cadi, was a Spanish teacher from Oran in French Algeria.

Montebourg spent his childhood in Fixin, Côte-d'Or. He studied law at the University of Dijon and became a lawyer at the Paris Court of Appeal in 1990.

Political Career (1997-2012)

Montebourg began his political career in 1997 when he was elected as a deputy for the Socialist Party in the National Assembly of France. He held this position until 2012 when his constituency was abolished.

Work in Socialist Governments (2012-2014)

In 2012, Montebourg was appointed Minister of Industrial Renewal in the government of Jean-Marc Ayrault. In 2013, he became Minister of Economy, Growth, and Digital Technology in the first government of Manuel Valls.

Departure from Government

In August 2014, Montebourg resigned from the government in protest against its austerity policies. He was replaced by Emmanuel Macron.

Political Activities after 2014

In 2016, Montebourg launched a campaign for the Socialist Party's presidential nomination, proposing a mix of economic sovereignty and social renewal. He later withdrew from the race and endorsed Benoît Hamon.

Departure from the Socialist Party

In 2018, Montebourg left the Socialist Party and announced his retirement from politics.

Return to Politics

In 2021, Montebourg co-founded a new political party, l'Engagement. He also announced his candidacy for the 2022 presidential election but later withdrew.

Personal Life

Montebourg was previously in a relationship with journalist Audrey Pulvar. In 2014, he married Aurélie Filippetti, who was Minister of Culture in the Valls government. They had a daughter together, Jeanne, in 2015. However, their marriage ended in 2017.
