Artsyom Kureni was born on August 23, 1991, in Minsk, Belarus, and was a Leo by birth. As a young boy, he aspired to be a designer and attended an art and architecture school. However, his fate took an unexpected turn when he passed the entrance exams for the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, where he studied drama and film acting.
Theater and Film Career
In 2013, Kureni joined the Republican Theater of Belarusian Drama under the direction of Aleksandr Gartsev. On its stage, he performed in various productions, including "Ticket to the Brest Train," "Gender Pranks," and "Contract." While the theater received state funding and adhered to censorship and ideological guidelines, it allowed its actors to participate in film and television projects.
Kureni's film debut occurred in 2011 with a cameo appearance in "Troop Along the River." He also made brief appearances in the TV series "Mukhtar. New Footprints." Despite his lukewarm reception toward the television format, he saw these roles as opportunities for income and networking.
In 2015, Kureni starred in the comedy-drama "Garash," which briefly held the record for Belarus's highest-grossing film. In 2016, he played the lead role of Vyacheslav Smolich in the film "Traces on Water," which depicted the fight against banditry in post-war years. The film was based on a novel by former police colonel Nikolai Ilyinsky, and Kureni went to great lengths to perform his own stunts, save for one horseback-riding scene.
Personal Life
Kureni's personal and professional life are intertwined. He frequently performs alongside his wife, Anna Semyonakova, and they often rehearse at home, discussing the intricacies of acting. Together, they raise their son, Bogdan. Their relationship is widely admired, drawing comparisons to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
Semyonakova, also a graduate of the Academy of Arts, initially failed her entrance exams due to nerves. She later succeeded by focusing on enjoying the moment rather than worrying about the outcome.
Recent Projects
In 2021, Kureni appeared in the film "Zoya," which portrayed the life of partisan heroine Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya. The film sparked controversy, with some praising it and others, including blogger BadComedian, criticizing its historical inaccuracies and perceived romanticization of the Nazis. Despite the debate, it remains a significant work in Kureni's filmography.
