Carol Matthau Saroyan: A Life in the Arts
Carol Matthau Saroyan, born Carol Grace on September 11, 1924, in New York City, was an American actress, writer, and socialite known for her intelligence and charming personality.
Early Life
Grace's mother, a Russian-Jewish immigrant, gave birth to her at the age of 16. Her father remains unknown. When her mother remarried Charles Marcus, a wealthy Bendix executive, Grace took his surname.
Marriages and Family
She married Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Saroyan twice, having two children with him: renowned writer Aram Saroyan and actress Lucy Saroyan, who passed away in 2003. On August 21, 1959, Grace wed actor Walter Matthau, remaining his wife until his death in 2001. They had one son, Charles Matthau, who became a television director.
Literary Contributions
In addition to her acting career, Grace published a novella, "The Secret in the Daisy," in 1955, drawing on her childhood experiences. She later released an autobiography, "Among the Porcupines," in 1992.
Acting Career
Though her film and television career was modest, Grace appeared in the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" episode "Cop for a Day." She portrayed librarian Carol Logan in Walter Matthau's 1960 crime drama "Gangster Story." In 1976, she worked with director Elaine May in the drama "Mikey and Nicky," also starring Peter Falk and John Cassavetes. She also appeared in the 1978 video project "The Barbara Walters Special."
Later Years and Death
Carol Matthau Saroyan passed away from a brain aneurysm on July 20, 2003, at the age of 76. She left behind a legacy as a talented artist and a beloved member of the artistic community.
