Artemy Vasiliev: A Renowned Russian Composer and Educator
Early Life and EducationArtemy Vasiliev, a distinguished Russian composer and educator, began his musical journey at the age of 12 under the tutelage of G. I. Shatkovsky. In 1995, he graduated from the Gnessin Music School's theory department, where he studied composition with Professor Yu. V. Vorontsov and electroacoustic music with A. I. Kiselev. He continued his education at the Moscow Conservatory, where he completed the composition department in 2000 and pursued his postgraduate studies from 2000 to 2002.
International Collaborations and Training
Vasiliev's exceptional talent led him to participate in several international training programs. In 1995, he underwent an internship in electroacoustic music at the Institut de Musique Expérimentale (Bourges). He also trained at the Electronic Studio of the Hungarian Radio (Budapest) in 1997 and the Electroacoustic Music Department of the University of Birmingham in 1999.
Career in London
In 2001, Vasiliev received a scholarship from the Royal Academy of Music (London) and earned a Master of Music (MMus) degree in composition from 2001 to 2003. He subsequently completed his doctoral studies (PhD, Doctor of Philosophy) in 2010 under the guidance of Professor Brian Elias. Upon returning to Moscow in 2010, he balanced his creative pursuits with professional roles at Yamaha Music (Russia) until 2016 and the Public Television of Russia channel.
Musical Compositions and Performances
Vasiliev's compositions have been performed at prestigious modern music concerts, including the Moscow Conservatory and festivals such as "Moscow Autumn," "Return," and "Moscow Forum." His works have also been featured at contemporary music festivals in Europe and the United States, receiving acclaim for their originality and technical prowess. Several of his compositions have been released on CD by renowned labels such as BMG, Black Box Music, Quartz Music, Electroshock Records, and Preiser Records.
Ballet Compositions
Vasiliev has gained international recognition for his ballet compositions. In May 2005, "The Canterville Ghost" premiered at the Peacock Theatre (West End, London), commissioned by The London Children's Ballet Company. His second ballet, "The Secret Garden," enjoyed successful performances at the same theater in May 2007 and April 2013. In December 2016, "The Snow Queen" premiered at the Yekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, choreographed by Vyacheslav Samodurov. In February 2017, a studio version of "The Secret Garden" was recorded at the Mosfilm Studios, with its premiere taking place at the Peacock Theatre (West End, London) in April 2017. A new version of "The Canterville Ghost" is set to premiere at the same theater in May 2018.
Collaboration with Igor Matvienko Studio
From 2013 to 2014, Artemy Vasiliev collaborated with Igor Matvienko Studio on the creation of music for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
