Biography of Arthur Eddington
Arthur Stanley Eddington, a renowned physicist and astronomer, was born on December 28, 1882, in the small English town of Kendal. From the beginning of his scientific career, Eddington was fascinated by the structure of stellar systems and the motion of celestial bodies. He studied at the University of Cambridge from 1901 to 1905, excelling in his pursuit of knowledge. Immediately after leaving the university, he was appointed as the chief assistant at the famous Greenwich Observatory.
Contributions to Astronomy
Eddington's interest in the structure of stellar systems and the motion of celestial bodies continued to grow. In 1913, he was elected as a professor of astronomy at his alma mater, the University of Cambridge. Just a year later, Eddington became the director of the university observatory and published his first scientific work, "Stellar Movements and the Structure of the Universe." He explored various topics in the field of stellar science, including the distribution and motion of celestial bodies within the galaxy, pulsations of stars, and the state of interstellar matter. However, his most significant contribution to astronomy was the development of the theory of the internal structure of stars.
The Theory of Stellar Structure
In 1916, Eddington began working on a new theory that would solve a long-standing problem in astrophysics. He calculated that the temperature in the central regions of stars should reach approximately 40 million degrees Celsius. Under such conditions, nuclear reactions would occur, transforming hydrogen into helium and releasing enough energy to sustain stellar radiation. Despite initial skepticism from some scientists who believed that the temperatures within stars were not high enough for nuclear reactions, Eddington remained steadfast in his theory. He consolidated his findings in the classic work "The Internal Constitution of the Stars."
The Theory of Relativity and Experimental Verification
Eddington was also deeply intrigued by the general theory of relativity, formulated by the German scientist Albert Einstein. In 1918, at the request of the Physical Society, Eddington prepared the "Report on the Relativistic Theory of Gravitation," becoming the first to present Einstein's theory in English. Eddington decided to experimentally verify one of Einstein's predictions, which stated that light passing through a gravitational field would be deflected from its original path. As the professor at the University of Cambridge, Eddington made numerous significant contributions to the study of the universe. He determined the density of the dwarf star companion orbiting the Sirius star, revealing its immense density. This breakthrough contributed to the advancement of the physics of degenerate matter.
Recognition and Legacy
Eddington's contributions to science earned him recognition worldwide, and in 1938, he became the president of the International Astronomical Union. He remained in this position until his death in 1944. Arthur Stanley Eddington's work revolutionized our understanding of stellar systems and the universe as a whole.
