Early Life and Education
Nicolae Donici was born in the Russian Empire in a suburb of Chişinău. He graduated from the Novorossiysk University in Odessa, Russia.
Career in Russia
Before the Russian Revolution in 1917, Donici served in the state office of the State Council of the Russian Empire. He was a descendant of several notable Romanian and Moldovan figures.
Astronomy in Russia and Romania
Despite his bureaucratic duties, Donici maintained a keen interest in astronomy and collaborated with prominent Russian astronomers. In 1908, he built an observatory in Bessarabia, which became part of Romania in 1918. From 1918 to 1944, Donici worked in Romania, continuing his astronomical observations and research.
Later Years in France
After 1944, Donici resided in France, where he worked at observatories in Meudon and Nice. The exact date and place of his death remain unknown.
Research and Publications
Donici's research focused on solar astronomy, chromosphere and planetary studies, and zodiacal light. He observed numerous solar and lunar eclipses, and investigated the absence of an atmosphere on the planet Mercury. He also witnessed the bright passage of Halley's Comet in 1910 and studied zodiacal light in Egypt and Algeria.
Affiliations and Honors
Donici was a member of several international and national astronomical societies. He was an Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy and authored over 77 scientific papers.
