Arthur Sulzberger Jr. Biography

Arthur Sulzberger Jr. is the publisher of The New York Times and the chairman of The New York Times Company's board of directors. He took on this role in 1997, succeeding his father. Sulzberger was born in Mount Kisco, New York, to Barbara Winslow Sulzberger and Arthur Ochs Sulzberger. It is worth mentioning that the Sulzberger family has been involved with The Times for a long time, starting with Arthur Jr.'s grandfather, Arthur Hays Sulzberger.

Sulzberger graduated from Tufts University in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in political science. He began his career at the Raleigh Times before spending two years as a correspondent for The Associated Press in London. In 1978, he finally joined the family newspaper, The New York Times. Initially, Sulzberger worked in the Washington bureau before being transferred to New York in 1981 as a reporter. He quickly climbed the career ladder, becoming an assistant editor that same year.

In 1985, Sulzberger completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School. He quickly applied his new skills in various business departments, including production and corporate planning, from 1983 to 1987. Sulzberger also played a key role in the development of the Times Square Business Improvement District, where he served as the first chairman. Additionally, he helped establish the New York-based group, Outward Bound, and even served as its director for a period of time.

Sulzberger has two children. His son, Arthur Gregg Sulzberger, is the fourth generation to work for The New York Times and had his first article published in February 2009. Sulzberger Jr. married artist and journalist Gail Gregg in 1975. They were together for a considerable amount of time before announcing their decision to divorce in May 2008. Despite the end of their marriage, the couple remains on amicable terms, keeping the exact reasons for their separation private.

Arthur Sulzberger Jr.'s father, known as "Punch," was a well-known figure among publishers and avid readers. In a similar vein, Sulzberger Jr. acquired the nickname "Pinch."
