A Historical First in TanzaniaAsha-Rose Migiro made history when she became the first female Foreign Minister of Tanzania. Prior to this groundbreaking appointment a year ago, she served as the Minister for Community Development, Gender, and Children for five years.

Migiro's appointment as the UN Deputy Secretary-General marks another historic milestone. She is the second woman to hold this position since its establishment by the General Assembly in December 1997. Her predecessor was Canada's Louise Fréchette.
Early Life and Education
Migiro was born on July 7, 1956, in Songea, Tanzania. She earned her law degree from the University of Dar es Salaam. Subsequently, she pursued doctoral studies at the University of Konstanz in Germany, receiving a doctorate in law.
Academic and Professional Background
Migiro began her professional career in 1980 as a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam. She later held various positions within the Tanzanian government, including Deputy Minister of Education, before becoming Foreign Minister in 2020.
Personal Life
Migiro is married to Professor Cleophas Migiro and they have two daughters.
