Alex Callinicos, British Trotskyist

Alex Callinicos is a British Trotskyist who serves on the Central Committee of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), the British section of the International Socialist Tendency.

Early Life and Education

Born in London in 1956, Callinicos' father was a Greek resistance activist during World War II. His mother hailed from the British aristocratic Dalberg-Acton family. Callinicos received an MA and DPhil in politics from Oxford University in 1979.

Academic Career

Callinicos was a lecturer in politics at the University of York before becoming a professor of European Studies at King's College London in 2005. He is on the editorial board of the journal "International Socialism" and is the British correspondent for "Actuel Marx."

Socialist Activism

Callinicos was first drawn to the revolutionary movement while studying at Balliol College, Oxford. As an analyst of the student movement, he contributed to publications of the International Socialists (forerunner to the SWP). He became known as an expert on South Africa and the work of the French philosopher Louis Althusser.

Political Involvement

Elected to the SWP's Central Committee in the early 1980s, Callinicos has been a prominent public intellectual. He is a brilliant orator and has been responsible for the SWP's international work.

Anti-Globalization Activism

Callinicos participated in the Prague counter-summit in September 2000 and the Genoa G8 protests in June 2001. He is involved in organizing European Social Forums and has analyzed anti-globalization/alter-globalization movements in his book "Anti-Capitalist Manifesto."

Collaborations and Publications

Callinicos has contributed to the "Contemporary Marxist Dictionary" with Jacques Bidet and Stathis Kouvelakis. He has also written numerous articles for the "New Left Review." In Tariq Ali's satirical novel "Redemption" (1990), Callinicos is portrayed as the loquacious intellectual "Alex Mango."
