Ashot Voskanyan: Armenian Political Figure and Diplomat

Ashot Vaginakovich Voskanyan (Armenian: Աշոտ Վաղինակովիչ Ոսկանյան) was born on April 24, 1949, in Yerevan. He is an Armenian political figure and diplomat.

Education and Academic Career

In 1972, Voskanyan graduated from the Philosophy Department of the Faculty of History at Yerevan State University. In 1975, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Department of Philosophy and Logic at Yerevan State University. Additionally, in 1986, he underwent a training program in philosophy at Leipzig University.

After completing his studies, Voskanyan worked as a lecturer at the Yerevan Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages from 1975 to 1977. He then became a lecturer at Yerevan State University and served as an associate professor from 1988 to 1995.

Political Career

From 1990 to 1995, Voskanyan served as a deputy in the Supreme Council. He was the Chairman of the Permanent Ethics Committee and a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Council. He was also a member of the "AOD" party. In 1992 and 1993, he led the Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

From 1993 to 1995, Voskanyan was the Chairman of the Armenian-German Parliamentary Group. He was also a member of the Constitutional Commission of the Supreme Council of Armenia. In 1995, he became a delegate of the Armenian National Church Assembly.

From 1995 to 1998, Voskanyan served as a member of the parliament. He continued his diplomatic career as the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the OSCE and UNO in Vienna from 1995 to 1997. During this time, he also served as the Ambassador of Armenia to Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia (with residence in Vienna) from 1996 to 1997.

Since 1997, Voskanyan has been the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Germany. He is a member of the German-Armenian Society.

Academic Achievements

Voskanyan obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1983. His thesis was on the methodology of social sciences and the problem of identity. In 2001, he became an Academician of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences.

Since 2001, Voskanyan has been serving as an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.
