Asclepiades of Phlius
Early Life and EducationAsclepiades was an influential philosopher from ancient Greece, who belonged to the Eretrian school of philosophy. He was a close friend of Menedemus of Eretria, and the two resided in Megara, where they studied under Stilpo. Later, they traveled to Elis to study with Phaedo.
Eretrian Period
Asclepiades and Menedemus returned to Eretria and founded a school there, carrying on the teachings of Phaedo. They became prominent figures in the city, with Asclepiades said to be a gifted poet and Menedemus an accomplished actor.
Personal Life
Asclepiades and Menedemus married into the same family, with Asclepiades marrying the mother and Menedemus marrying the daughter. They lived together in the same household, fostering a close connection between the two philosophers.
Legacy
Asclepiades died at an advanced age, preceding the passing of Menedemus. His contributions to philosophy have not survived in extant texts, but his influence as a teacher and philosopher in the Eretrian school is widely acknowledged.
