Early Life and Education

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was born on December 25, 1926, in the princely state of Gwalior (now part of Madhya Pradesh). His father, Krishna Bihari Vajpayee, was a school inspector. Vajpayee inherited his father's determination, poetic talent, and oratorical skills. Vajpayee studied at colleges in Gwalior and Kanpur, where he majored in political science and earned a master's degree.

Political Career

Vajpayee's political journey began in 1942 when he joined the "Quit India" movement against British colonial rule. He was imprisoned for his involvement. After India's independence, he was arrested during the "Emergency" imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975-77. During this time, he wrote the famous lines: "We may break, but we shall not bend."

Vajpayee first contested for the lower house of parliament in 1952 but lost. He became a member of parliament in 1957, after the second general elections. He has been re-elected eight times to the lower house and twice to the upper house (Rajya Sabha).

Prime Ministership and Bharatiya Janata Party

In 1996, Vajpayee became the head of a single-party minority government, which resigned after just 13 days. In 1998, he formed a coalition government and became India's 13th Prime Minister. During his tenure, he focused on improving India's relations with its neighbors and promoting economic growth.

Character and Personal Life

Vajpayee is a celibate, known as a "brahmachari" in Hinduism. He is a connoisseur of music, dance, poetry, and good caricatures. He prefers to wear traditional Indian clothing and enjoys traditional Indian cuisine. Vajpayee is known for his integrity, his lack of family connections, and his ability to connect with people.
