Canadian Economist of Greek Descent
Canadian economist of Greek descent, George Agapitos, played a significant role in the development of economics, particularly in the post-Keynesian school of thought.
Educational Background
George Agapitos received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from McGill University in 1951 and 1953, respectively. He then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Cambridge, which he completed in 1959.
Academic Career
Following his doctorate, Agapitos joined the faculty of McGill University in 1959. He rose through the ranks, becoming a full professor in 1966 and then chair of the Department of Economics from 1974 to 1978.
Intellectual Contributions
Agapitos was a prominent representative of the post-Keynesian school of thought. He built upon the ideas of influential left-leaning economists such as Joan Robinson and Michal Kalecki. His work challenged prevailing neoclassical economic theories and focused on macroeconomic issues such as inflation, unemployment, and economic growth.
Recognition and Honors
In recognition of his contributions to economics, George Agapitos was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1976. This honor is bestowed upon individuals who have made outstanding achievements in various academic disciplines.
