Early Life and Education

Atsuko Tanaka was born on November 14, 1962, in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. She pursued a liberal arts education at Ferris University Junior College. During her college years, she developed a passion for theater and actively participated in student productions.

Career in Voice Acting

After graduating from college, Tanaka worked in the computer industry for five years. However, her creative spirit led her to pursue a different path. She discovered a dance studio and enrolled in classes. Through connections she made there, she decided to make a career change and enrolled in a voice acting school.

Tanaka's voice acting career began in 1991 with the anime miniseries "Ogenki Clinic." However, her breakthrough role came in 1995 when she voiced the lead character, Major Motoko Kusanagi, in the groundbreaking anime film "Ghost in the Shell." Tanaka's voice gave depth and charisma to one of the most beloved characters in Japanese pop culture. She continued to voice Kusanagi for over two decades, with the latest installment of the franchise, "Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Sustainable War," released in late 2021.

Throughout her career, Tanaka lent her voice to numerous memorable characters in Japanese anime, including Ryoji Tamia in "Parasite," Hanaimi in "Jujutsu Kaisen," Conan in "Naruto," Caster in "Fate/Stay Night," Claudine in "Queen's Blade," Lisa Lisa in "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure," and many more. Her final voice acting role was as Frances Midford in the anime series "Black Butler: Boarding School."

In addition to anime, Tanaka also worked on video games based on popular anime series. She voiced Bayonetta in the eponymous video game and Rinnedottir in "Genshin Impact."
