Aurélie Filippetti: French Writer, Politician, and Former Minister of Culture
Early Life and Education
Aurélie Filippetti was born in Audun-le-Tiche, France, into a family with a strong leftist political background. Her father was a miner and former communist mayor, while her grandfather was a miner and Resistance fighter who was captured by the Gestapo. Filippetti graduated from the Lycée Georges de La Tour in Metz and the École normale supérieure de Fontenay-Saint-Cloud, where she studied classical literature.
Literary Career
Filippetti is an accomplished writer and has published several books, including "The Last Days of the Working Class" (2003), which recounts the story of her grandfather's experience as a miner and Resistance fighter. Other notable works include "A Man in the Pocket" (2007), "Does School Still Educate Citizens?" (2008), and "I'm 20, What's Next for Me?" (2012). She has also written scripts for theater productions.
Political Career
Filippetti began her political career in 1999 by joining the Green Party. In 2001, she was elected to the Paris city council. She later joined the Socialist Party in 2006 and supported Ségolène Royal's presidential campaign in 2007. In 2007, she was elected to the National Assembly of France, representing the 8th constituency of Moselle.
Ministerial Post
In 2012, Filippetti supported François Hollande's presidential campaign. Upon Hollande's election, she was appointed Minister of Culture and Communications in Jean-Marc Ayrault's first government. She served in this role in both Ayrault's second government and Manuel Valls' first government.
Resignation and Return to the National Assembly
In 2014, Filippetti resigned from the government in protest against the austerity measures implemented by Prime Minister Valls. She returned to the National Assembly, where she had been replaced by Gérard Terrier during her tenure as minister.
Continued Political Involvement
Filippetti remained politically active, supporting Arnaud Montebourg's bid for the Socialist presidential nomination in 2017 and criticizing the American left for failing to ensure Bernie Sanders' victory in the Democratic presidential primaries. She later joined Benoît Hamon's campaign for the presidency.
Personal Life
In 2014, Aurélie Filippetti married fellow Socialist politician Arnaud Montebourg. They had a daughter, Jeanne, in September 2015. Their marriage ended in divorce in 2017.
