Early Life and Education

Birth and Family

August Anschütz was born on January 9, 1826, in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany. His mother passed away soon after his birth, and his father followed six years later.

Education

Anschütz received his early education at the Schulpforta Gymnasium. He then studied law at the University of Bonn and later transferred to the University of Berlin.

Academic Career

Assistant Professor and Travels

Upon graduating, Anschütz embarked on an academic journey to France, where he studied legal documents in Parisian libraries and observed French jurisprudence.

University Positions

In 1851, Anschütz became an assistant professor of German and French law at the University of Bonn. In 1855, he was appointed associate professor of German law at the University of Greifswald. He later accepted a position as full professor at the University of Halle, where he held the chairs of commercial law, German civil law, history of German law, and agricultural law.

Scholarly Contributions

Collaborations and Publications

In addition to his teaching duties, Anschütz collaborated with Fittig, Reno, and Windscheid on the publication of the "Archiv für die civilistische Praxis."

Written Works

Anschütz revised the fifth edition of Zachariae's "Handbuch des franz. Civilrechts" (1855) and published "Summa legis Longobardorum" (1855).

Later Life and Death

Health Issues and Relocation

In 1872-1873, Anschütz suffered from severe chest pain. Doctors advised him to relocate to a more favorable climate. He chose Bad Soden in Hesse, where he passed away suddenly on August 2, 1874.
