Biography of Augustine Eguavoen

Augustine Eguavoen, born on August 19, 1965 in Benin City, Nigeria, is a renowned Nigerian football player and coach. He is known for his defensive skills and has captained the Nigerian national team. Eguavoen made history as the first African to compete in the Russian championships.

Football Career

Eguavoen began his professional football career in Nigeria, playing for the NNPC Warri and Bendel Insurance teams. He later moved to AK Bell Lagos before making a move to Europe. He played for Gent in Belgium from 1986 to 1991 and then joined Kortrijk from 1991 to 1995. Eguavoen also had brief stints with Orense in Spain and Sacramento in the United States.

In 1997, Eguavoen made history by joining Torpedo-Luzhniki in Russia, becoming the first African player in the Russian championships. He represented Torpedo in the Intertoto Cup and even served as the team's captain. Eguavoen also represented Nigeria in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, being the only representative from the Russian championship in the tournament. However, in early 1999, he suffered an injury that forced him to leave Russia for treatment. He ended his playing career with Sliema Wanderers in Malta, where he also served as a player-coach.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Eguavoen transitioned into coaching. He started his coaching career at Sliema Wanderers in Malta from 2000 to 2001. He then returned to Nigeria and coached Bendel Insurance in 2002. Eguavoen also had a stint with the Nigerian Youth National Team from 2002 to 2003 before becoming an assistant coach for the Nigerian national team from 2003 to 2005. In September 2005, he was appointed as the head coach of the Nigerian national team.

Achievements

Throughout his career, Eguavoen achieved several notable accomplishments. He won the Maltese Cup in 2000 with Sliema Wanderers. As a player, he played 25 games in the top division of the Russian championship, scoring one goal. Eguavoen was also part of the Nigerian team that won the African Cup of Nations in 1994 and was a silver medalist in 1988 and a bronze medalist in 1992. He represented Nigeria in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups.

Under Eguavoen's guidance, the Nigerian national team won the bronze medal in the African Cup of Nations in 2006.
