Toninho Cerezo: A Brazilian Soccer Icon
Humble BeginningsToninho Cerezo was born into a family of circus performers. His soccer journey began in the amateur team "Ferroviaria," where he was spotted by a scout from "Atletico Mineiro" named Geraldo Patotinha. Despite his poverty, a friend lent him boots for his trial.
Rise to Stardom
After a brief loan spell at "Nacional" in Manaus, Cerezo returned to "Atletico Mineiro" and established himself as a key player. He played 451 games, scoring 77 goals.
Roman Adventure
In 1983, Cerezo was sold to "Roma" for 6 billion lire. Despite the presence of another famous Brazilian, Falcao, Cerezo struggled to adapt to the Italian climate and environment. Nevertheless, he won two Italian Cups, scoring in both finals, and reached the European Cup final in his first season.
Revival at Sampdoria
In 1986, Cerezo moved to "Sampdoria," where he experienced a resurgence. He became the team's creative force, leading them to two Italian Cups, a Cup Winners' Cup, a Super Cup, and a second European Cup final.
Return to Brazil
In 1992, Cerezo returned to his homeland at the peak of his career. He went on to win two Intercontinental Cups.
Coaching Career
On December 3, 2011, Cerezo was appointed manager of "Vitoria" in Salvador.
