Joseph Dos Santos: French Chess Grandmaster
Early Career and Zonal TournamentsJoseph Dos Santos, a French chess grandmaster, began his professional career participating in several zonal tournaments organized by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE). In 1975, he finished 3rd-4th in the Teheran zonal tournament. Six years later, he secured 1st place in Sharjah and a 3rd-5th placing in Montpellier.
Interzonal and Olympiad Appearances
In 1982, Dos Santos competed in the Toluca Interzonal Tournament, finishing in 14th place. He represented France in the World Chess Olympiads from 1980 to 1988 and also participated in the World Team Chess Championship in 1985.
International Success
Throughout his career, Dos Santos achieved notable results in international competitions. In 1979, he placed 2nd in the "B" tournament at Ramsgate. He also finished in the top 10 in several other tournaments, including Les (4th-6th in 1981, 4th-13th in 1983), Bagnoles-de-l'Orne (2nd-3rd in 1982), Marseille and Geneva (both 2nd-3rd in 1988), and Saint-Maxime (2nd in 1983).
Notable Victories and Grandmaster Title
Dos Santos continued his winning streak, securing first place in Strasbourg (1985), Trnava (5th-7th in 1986), and the second group of the Budapest tournament (1987). His impressive performance in Kolhapur earned him a joint 1st-2nd placing in 1987. His exceptional achievements culminated in the prestigious grandmaster title, awarded by the International Chess Federation.
Later Career
In 1989, Dos Santos celebrated another tournament victory in Augsburg. He continued to compete in various competitions throughout his career, leaving a lasting mark on French chess.
