Early Life and Education
Leonids Belostotskiswas born on February 6, 1936, in Jaunpiebalga, Latvia, then part of the Soviet Union. In 1954, he graduated from Jaunpiebalga High School and went on to study physical culture at the Latvian State Institute of Physical Culture, graduating in 1959.
Teaching Career
After graduating, Belostotskis became a physical education teacher at secondary schools in the villages of Valgunde and Kalnciems. He held these positions until his retirement.
Chess Composition
Belostotskis began publishing chess problems in 1960. He composed approximately 470 problems of various genres, with multi-movers being his specialty.
Competition Successes
Belostotskis achieved significant success in chess composition competitions, winning 37 prizes, including 15 first prizes. He was the 10-time Latvian Chess Composition Champion and a four-time Latvian SSR Champion.
National and International Recognition
Belostotskis was awarded the title of Master of Sports of the USSR in Chess Composition in 1975. He was also Chairman of the Commission for Chess Composition in the Latvian SSR from 1975 to 1984.
Final Years and Legacy
Belostotskis passed away on April 14, 2018, in Kalnciems, Latvia, and was buried on April 18, 2018. He left behind a legacy as one of Latvia's most accomplished chess composers, with a significant number of his problems included in the FIDE Albums.
