Barbara Dührkop
Barbara Dührkop is a Spanish politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Spain from 1987 to 2009.
Early Life and Education
Dührkop earned a degree in philosophy from Uppsala University. In 1971, she became an assistant professor at the University of Hamburg and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Career in Education
In 1978, Dührkop taught languages at the Usandizaga Institute and the German School in San Sebastián. She later became the head of the German School in 1995.
Political Activism
Dührkop's husband, Enrique Casas, was assassinated in 1984 by Basque separatists. Dührkop joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 1999.
European Parliament Service
Dührkop was elected to the European Parliament in 1987. She served as coordinator for the PSOE group in the Committee on Culture and Education. From 1991 to 1999, she held the position of Vice-Chair of the Committee on Budgets.
End of Parliamentary Career
Dührkop was placed low on the PSOE list for the 2009 European Parliament elections. She was not reelected and ended her tenure as an MEP.
Recognition
Dührkop has been awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria.
