Biography of Karen Demirchyan
Karen Seropovich Demirchyan (Armenian: Կարեն Սերոպի Դեմիրճյան) was an Armenian party and state figure. He was born on April 17, 1932, in Yerevan, and passed away on October 27, 1999, in Yerevan. Demirchyan was a prominent figure in Armenian politics and government.
Early Life and Education
Demirchyan attended the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute from 1949 to 1954, where he studied engineering mechanics. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1966 and 1971, as well as the Order of the October Revolution in 1976. After graduating, he worked as an engineer-designer at the Leningrad Scientific Research Institute from 1954 to 1955.
Career
From 1955 to 1966, Demirchyan worked at the Yerevan Electrotechnical Plant, starting as a master and eventually becoming the director. In 1966, he became the secretary of the Yerevan City Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia (CPA), and later served as the first secretary. From 1972 to 1974, he was a secretary of the CPA Central Committee, and from 1974 to 1988, he held the position of first secretary of the CPA Central Committee.
Demirchyan attended the Higher Party School at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) from 1988 to 1991. He was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR and a member of the CPSU Central Committee.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Demirchyan became the CEO and chairman of the board of directors of "ArmElectroMashin" Joint Stock Company from 1991 to 1999. In 1998, he ran as a candidate for the presidency of Armenia.
In April 1999, Demirchyan became the chairman of the "Unity" bloc. On May 30, 1999, he was elected as a member of the parliament, and on June 10, 1999, he assumed the position of the speaker of the Armenian parliament. He also served as the founding chairman of the People's Party.
National Hero of Armenia
On December 27, 1999, Demirchyan was posthumously awarded the highest title of "National Hero of Armenia" by the President of Armenia, in recognition of his significant contributions to his homeland.
