Mark "Barney" Greenway: A Politically Charged Force in Heavy Metal

Early Life and Influences

Mark Greenway was born on July 13, 1969, in Great Barr, England. His musical influences include seminal hardcore and punk bands such as Dead Kennedys, Discharge, Anti Cimex, Celtic Frost, Death, Swans, My Bloody Valentine, and Minor Threat.

Benediction: Genesis of a Death Metal Band

In 1989, Greenway co-founded Benediction, a death/thrash metal band, alongside Paul Adams (bass), Peter Rew, and Darren Brookes (guitars). The band released a demo ("The Dreams You Dread") and a debut album ("Subconscious Terror") before Greenway's departure to join Napalm Death.

Napalm Death: A New Vocal Powerhouse

Following the departure of Lee Dorrian from Napalm Death, Greenway stepped in as the band's vocalist. His politically charged lyrics and aggressive vocal delivery became synonymous with the band's sound. Greenway has been the primary lyricist for Napalm Death, finding inspiration in the anarcho-punk band Crass.

Unwavering Loyalty

Despite his involvement in other projects, Greenway has remained committed to Napalm Death and has repeatedly stated his reluctance to join any other band. His unwavering loyalty has cemented his status as a vital cog in the band's legacy.
