Barry Coe - American Actor
Barry S. Coe, born on November 26, 1934, is an American actor known for his work in both film and television. He gained recognition for his role in the television series "Follow the Sun" and for portraying "Mr. Goodwrench" in a series of television commercials in the 70s and 80s.
Early Life and Education
Barry Coe was originally named Barry Clark Heacock upon birth. However, after his mother, Jean Elizabeth Shea, married Joseph Spalding Coe Sr., he was renamed Joseph Spalding Coe in honor of his stepfather. His biological father, writer and journalist Francis Elmer "Frank" Heacock, tragically died in a car accident on April 5, 1940, in North Hollywood, California. Coe attended the University of Southern California and it was during a trip to Palm Springs with his fraternity brothers in the mid-1950s that he caught the attention of a talent agent.
Acting Career
After signing a contract with 20th Century Fox, Barry Coe made his acting debut in 1956, playing the character Mr. Davis in the film "Love Me Tender" alongside Elvis Presley. In 1957, he portrayed Rodney Harrington in the original version of the film "Peyton Place," based on the novel by Grace Metalious. Coe continued to work in films such as "The Bravados" in 1958 and "But Not for Me" in 1959. In 1960, he received the Golden Globe for "Most Promising Newcomer - Male" along with James Shigeta, Troy Donahue, and George Hamilton.
In 1961, Coe appeared in the television show "Follow the Sun" as Paul Templin, a journalist working in Honolulu, Hawaii. The series followed the adventures and investigations of a group of journalists. Although the show had some successful episodes, it was canceled after only 29 episodes. After the cancellation of "Follow the Sun," Coe made a guest appearance in an episode of "Bonanza." He continued to work in both film and television, although he did not receive many major roles. His last film role was in 1978, in the movie "Jaws 2," after which he primarily worked in television series.
Later Life
In the late 70s and early 80s, Coe starred in a series of national television commercials for an automotive parts store. He is married to Norwegian beauty queen Jorunn Kristiansen. After leaving his acting career behind, Barry Coe became involved in the sales of nutritional supplements through his company "Adventures in Nutrition." He currently resides in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California.
