Early Life and Marriage to Basinus
Basinah was married to Basinus, the King of Thuringia. However, in approximately 463, she fled to the court of Childeric I, King of the Salian Franks. According to legend, she actively sought Childeric's hand in marriage, stating that she had heard of his great valor and boldness.
Return of Childeric and Their Marriage
Childeric had been exiled from his kingdom due to his excessive debauchery. With the help of his loyal advisor, Viomadius, he arranged for his return from Thuringia. Basinah accompanied Childeric upon his return, leaving behind her former husband.
The Night of Visions
On their wedding night, Basinah initially rejected Childeric's advances. She asked him to look into the courtyard and then report what he saw. Childeric witnessed a series of wild animals, including lions, bears, and dogs. Basinah interpreted these visions as a prophecy of their descendants. She predicted that their first son would be powerful like a lion, while their later descendants would be mere dogs.
Legacy and Lineage
Basinah gave birth to three daughters and one son, Clovis I. Clovis would later become the founder of the Frankish Kingdom and the first King of France. Basinah is believed to have played an active role in her husband's political decisions, as was customary among Frankish women of that time.
