Biography of Bekim Fehmiu
Bekim Fehmiu was a Yugoslavian actor of Albanian origin. He was born in 1936 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and spent his childhood in Prizren, Kosovo. Fehmiu's father was a well-known Albanian independence fighter and talented educator.
Fehmiu attended the Faculty of Drama Arts in Belgrade, specializing in film and drama. After graduating, he began his acting career in the local theater in his hometown and later in Belgrade. However, he had to leave the capital's theater due to growing anti-Albanian sentiments in the country.
Early Career
Fehmiu started his film career in the 1950s but gained significant roles in the 1960s. One of his notable early works was the war film "Under the Same Sky" directed by Ljubisa Georgijevski, which was released in the Soviet Union under the title "Revenge for Murder".
In 1967, Fehmiu appeared in the drama "I Even Met Happy Gypsies". In 1971, he played the lead role in the joint Yugoslavian, American, and Italian project, "The Deserter". He portrayed the mysterious 18th-century figure, Count Cagliostro, in the Italian drama "Cagliostro" in 1974. The same year, he appeared in the Yugoslavian drama "Pavle Pavlovic" and the Italo-Franco-German drama "Salon Kitty".
Later Career and Legacy
Fehmiu continued acting in films until the late 1990s, appearing in more than 45 films in total. His last works were the action film "Balkan Island: The Last Story of the Century" in 1997 and the television project "Tristan and Isolde" in 1998. His fame extended beyond his home country, and Fehmiu became widely known in European countries like Italy, Spain, and Germany.
Aside from his acting talent, Fehmiu's attractive appearance, with his expressive eyes and handsome features, contributed to his popularity. He had a large fan base, predominantly consisting of women.
In 2001, Fehmiu wrote and released a memoir titled "Blistavo i strašno" (Brilliant and Terrible). He was married to actress Branka Petric, with whom he had two children. Their son, Uliks Fehmiu, also became an actor and producer.
