Ben Scrivens: Canadian Hockey Goaltender
Early Years and CareerBen Scrivens, a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender, was born in Spruce Grove, Alberta, near Edmonton. He began his career with the Spruce Grove Colts Bantam team before moving through several minor league clubs. In 2009, he enrolled at Cornell University, where he was named NCAA Rookie of the Year as a sophomore in the 2009-10 season.
NHL Debut and Career in North America
Scrivens joined the Toronto Maple Leafs organization in 2010 but spent most of his time in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Toronto Marlies. He made his NHL debut for the Leafs the following year, playing in 12 games. Despite being named AHL Goaltender of the Year in 2011-12, he remained unable to establish himself as Toronto's starting goalie.
Scrivens went on to play for the Los Angeles Kings and then the Edmonton Oilers, where he had his best NHL season in 2014-15, starting 57 games. In 2015, he signed with the Montreal Canadiens but remained a backup, spending much of the year in the AHL.
Move to the KHL
On July 14, 2016, Scrivens made his Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) debut with Dinamo Minsk. After one season, he joined Salavat Yulaev Ufa on July 4, 2017.
International Career
Scrivens represented Canada at the 2014 World Championship, where the team was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Personal Life
Ben Scrivens is married to Jenny, a former Cornell University hockey goalie who retired from the New York Riveters in 2021.
