Benedetto Castelli

Benedetto Castelli, an Italian physicist and mathematician, was a notable friend and disciple of Galileo Galilei. Born Antonio, he adopted the name Benedetto upon joining the Benedictine order.

Early Life and Career

Castelli held the position of abbot at the Monastery of Monte Cassino and concurrently served as a professor. After Galileo's departure from Pisa in 1613, Castelli succeeded him as the chair of mathematics there. He later taught in Rome.

Among his renowned students at Pisa were Evangelista Torricelli and Bonaventura Cavalieri. Castelli maintained an active correspondence with Galileo, assisting him in various scientific investigations.

Contributions to Hydraulics and Hydrometry

Castelli's primary contributions lie in the fields of hydraulics and hydrometry. His most significant work, "Measurement of Flowing Water" (1628), established the foundations of hydrometry, providing the first systematic exposition of the field.

Continuation of Galileo's Legacy

Castelli continued Galileo's research in hydrostatics, extending his work on fluid mechanics and buoyancy. Through his writings and teaching, Castelli disseminated Galileo's scientific discoveries and inspired generations of scientists to come.
