Early Life and Influences

Chilean playwright, theater and film director Marco Antonio de la Parra was born into a Sephardic family that had emigrated from Smyrna in 1920. His early experiences in the performing arts shaped his future career.

Theatrical Beginnings

In 1974, de la Parra founded the "Teatro Gótico" and directed Fernando Arrabal's play "The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria." He graduated from the University of Santiago and wrote his first play, "El Escaparate," in 1977.

Literary Output: Satire and Adaptation

De la Parra gained recognition for his satirical and dark comedies, often adapting classical works by authors such as Lope de Vega, Molière, and Rostand. He collaborated with prominent figures like Fernando Arrabal, Raúl Ruiz, and Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Recognition and Legacy

His plays have been translated into French, German, and other languages and performed on stages around the world. Notably, "El Coordinador" was staged by the Moscow Hermitage Theater in 2005.
