Benoit Lecomte was born in 1967 in France. He is an American of French descent and a long-distance swimmer. In 1992, after the death of his father from cancer, Lecomte moved to the United States. Devastated by his father's death, he dreamed of doing something that would help in the fight against cancer. This led to the idea of raising money for charity, and to draw attention to the issue, Lecomte decided to swim.
After six years of intense training, Lecomte became an endurance swimmer. However, his plans went much further. On July 16, 1998, he embarked on his daring and ambitious journey to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. Starting from Massachusetts, Lecomte swam in open water. The journey was not easy, as he faced towering waves, winds of 45-60 knots, and cold water. Nevertheless, Lecomte was determined to continue swimming in memory of his father and to fight against cancer.
Accompanied by a sailboat, Lecomte would climb aboard to rest and eat. He had to consume a significant amount of food to replenish the calories expended in the water. Swimming for eight hours each day, Lecomte slowly but steadily conquered the ocean. He only made one week-long stop during his journey in the Azores to repair equipment.
The sailboat, manned by a three-person crew, also played an important role in repelling sharks with a 25-foot electromagnetic field. Throughout the journey, Lecomte was pursued by a large white shark for five days. While jellyfish posed a challenge, dolphins and sea turtles brought joy and made the swim more interesting.
After 73 days, on September 28, Benoit Lecomte reached the shores of Quiberon Bay in Brittany, France, having covered a distance of 3,716 miles or almost 6 kilometers. The funds raised by Lecomte were used for cancer research. Despite some skepticism at the time regarding his swim, those familiar with open water swimming appreciated Lecomte's achievement.
Overall, the concept of "swimming across the ocean" is subjective, as there are no clear boundaries or rules. However, Benoit Lecomte is officially recognized as one of the few people in the world to have conquered the Atlantic. His next challenge is the Pacific Ocean, which he plans to cross by swimming from Japan to San Francisco.
