Bernard Bennett: A Passionate Pioneer of Snooker

Early Life and Introduction to Snooker

Bernard Bennett's journey into snooker began through the influence of his elder brother, John. Despite not being considered exceptionally talented, Bennett's love for the game never wavered.

Professional Career

Bennett made his Championship debut in 1969, suffering a first-match defeat to Rex Williams. His first professional victory came in Australia in 1986, where he triumphed over Warren Simpson. While his tournament triumphs were limited, Bennett remained a respected veteran.

Founding Member of Professional Associations

Bennett played a pivotal role in the establishment of the professional snooker landscape. He was a founding member of the Professional Billiards Players' Association in 1969 and later helped establish the WPBSA in 1982.

Amateur Tournaments and Southernhill Snooker Club

Beyond his professional endeavors, Bennett founded the Southernhill Snooker Club in Southampton. The club became a hub for amateur tournaments, attracting renowned snooker stars like Alex Higgins. Higgins emerged victorious in 1975 and 1979.

Personal Life and Legacy

Bennett continued his snooker career well into his 60s, but health issues eventually forced him to retire. He passed away on January 12, 2002, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a passionate and dedicated advocate for snooker.
